#MGS3Build - Complete!

#MGS3Build - Complete!

Seeing the colour come to life on my previous #MGS3Build update certainly made the build feel real, but not only that, I knew it wouldn't be long at all before I saw it all in one piece. The photo I shared on that previous article wasn't the best representation of the true colour, apologies there, but hopefully these images will give you a better idea of the colour and thoughts behind choosing it.

Millimetric Instruments MGS2 Spec rundown video!

For those of you that enjoy videos over written articles, I've made this humble video talking through some of the finer spec details of our UK demonstration Millimetric Instruments MGS2. This is not a demo as such, but you can hear the guitar in the background music throughout. 'Tone' Demo videos with much better guitar players than me will follow, where I plan to feature a variety of playing/music styles and sounds available from the guitar. For now, this video is simply to go through the specifications of this build, from body materials & finish, to fret wire, pickups and strap buttons. Yup, you get it all! But if anything is unclear or you'd like further info, do please contact me directly via my website or with Millimetric Instruments directly.

#MGS3Build - It's almost a guitar, right?!

Well this is getting so exciting for me and it's beginning to sink in what is happening! The last #mgs3build update finished by showing the chunk of walnut which will become the neck. Well Florian has been super busy the last few days roughing out the neck shape, profile, headstock and heel etc which you soon realise is quite the task with the quality of work he displays.

First of all, apologies for the delay in my MGS2Build updates here on the blog. Guitar Show 2019 prep absorbed all of my energies through the past month but enough with the excuses and let's get on with the Millimetric!

Things moved rather quickly through February as Florian was very much hoping to have the guitar to me in time for the Guitar Show. One of the most wonderful aspects of Florian's builds is the fretting, his unique fret end shaping style is as much an aesthetically pleasing addition as it is pure playable joy. Florian kindly filmed and shared some updates of the fretting process on this build on his Instagram stories, but sadly I don't have any photos other than the main image above.

#MGS2Build - Oxidation!

This is an update I've been really excited to see and share with you. If you've been following the #MGS2Build updates, you'll remember that Florian and myself decided on an oxidized finish for the walnut body and neck. Oxidation you ask?! A more recognizable example of oxidation if you're not already familiar of course! is that of rusting. We're not here for a school lesson, so simply put, Iron combining with Oxygen, forming 'rust'. Wood oxidation is commonly used to give a worn, patina'd or old look, but it can also be used to greatly darken the grain colour, and can be achieved with a vinegar and steel wool mixture applied to the surface. We've seen this technique/finish used many times on Millimetric necks predominantly, but Florian was very keen on trying it on a matched body and neck and who was I to say otherwise when it looks this good?!

The last update saw the body shaped out, which leads to sanding and a hint at how this is going to look in the end. Here's a couple of photos Florian sent over showing the wet sanding process, raising the grain to flatten it for a beautiful finish. The walnut body looks stunning! This is going to be oxidized, so I cannot wait for that lovely walnut to turn black, it's going to have so much character.

The latest message from Florian has arrived! He has been hard at work on the latest batch of guitars, including the UK demo model MGS2 for us and it's looking better and better. The body has been carved out after it's rough cut. As well as with the initial neck carve noted on the last update things are really taking shape.

My own first true custom build pt.1 - The journey begins

Even up until this point, this has been a long road for me. I'm going to delve into why, so forgive me if this rambles on too much, but I figured there might be aspects of this we all relate too. I've been increasingly disheartened with the electric guitar in terms of personal enjoyment for a while now. Although I have been surrounded by such beautiful instruments through my shop, I've really struggled (in my own head) to capture the excitement I once had and that's a slippery downward slope. One I'm sure we've all been on as self destructive, critical guitar players! I made a conscious effort a few months ago to change that.
