About Pre-Wired Harnesses
I wrote an extensive article about replacing your guitar's wiring harness, answering the main questions about each component and the potential differences and improvements that can be had in doing so. To read the full article, click Here!
Pre-Wired harnesses offer a great solution to replace or upgrade your guitar’s wiring. Although it can indeed be a simple install, I do personally highly recommend having prior experience of wiring a guitar before installing or taking it to a professional and trusted tech to carry out the install for you. I provide a fitting guide and wiring diagram with all harnesses which I recommend reading prior to beginning any install. All harnesses are made by me here at the Home of Tone, to ensure the best possible workmanship I can.
About the 'Signature Series'
After a number of years of making my harnesses, from offering a range of options and further developing the product, it has lead me to this natural road. My Signature Series. This is my personal choice of premium components as the highest grade replacement guitar electronics.
The series features my new USA made paper in oil capacitors and Pure Tone multi contact jacks as standard. Depending on your taper preference for your Left Handed harness, the RH taper version uses CTS 'TVT' series +/-5% tolerance pots, and the LH taper version uses CTS 250k Audio LH taper pots, German made solid copper 22awg wire with modern insulation and a lacquered cotton braid finish and a CRL spring loaded 3 way lever switch.
If you're upgrading from perhaps standard import or Japanese built guitars which have metric sized pots, you may need to widen the holes in your guitar's control plate etc to accommodate the slight larger US made quality pots we use. If you are fitting this harness to a USA built Telecaster, there is a good chance it already has imperial, US spec components meaning this will be a direct fit.
As standard, the spacing between components etc is based upon measurements taken from a USA built Fender Telecaster, but If you have a Telecaster style guitar that isn't a USA Fender, I can happily make a harness to suit your guitar. So please feel free to get in touch! We will compare measurements on your guitar to ensure it's suitability and wire it with the correct wire lengths between the components.
With or without Treble Bleed?
First up, what does it do? A Treble Bleed kit takes the 'high' treble tone frequencies out of the circuit at the volume pot, and puts them back in the circuit as the signal leaves the volume pot. This means the treble frequencies are prevented from naturally bleeding out of the circuit as your turn your volume pot down. The result is a smoothed out treble and a more uniform tone from 1 to 10. Reducing the treble drop out as the volume pot rolls off. Some guitar players wouldn't be without a treble bleed, and many have never used one on their guitars. Truth is, it is very much personal preference. I personally don't use a treble bleed mod on any of my guitars, and this is just due to the way I play. If you like the idea of retaining treble as you roll your volume pot down, then a treble bleed is for you!
Which Capacitor Value will I need?
As a rule the general recommendation is .022uF for humbuckers, .047uF for single coils. This is usually based off the pickup manufacturers recommendations, but you can of course use whichever you choose for the given application. I personally prefer .022uF for both single coil and humbuckers for example, the reason being that a .022uF will 'roll off' less treble than a .047uF, making the pot 'sweep' sound a touch more gradual. A .047uF will be an ever so slightly 'steeper' roll off of trebles. It's personal preference, but first port of call would be to check out your pickup manufacturers recommendation and go from there. For reference, all McNelly Pickups are recommended to pair with .022uF capacitors. Hope this helps!
- RH taper option - CTS 'TVT' Series +/-5% Tolerance long shaft pots - 250k, solid shaft pots as standard on Tele kits.
- LH taper option - CTS 250k audio LH Taper pots SPLIT SHAFT (Please note that if you require solid shaft pots, CTS don't make a LH taper solid shaft pot unfortunately. So you'll need brass sleeves to convert to solid shaft if your control knobs fix by grub screw rather than push fit.)
- USA made Paper in oil capacitor. .022uF or .047uF Capacitors
- German made 22AWG wire
- CRL 3 way spring loaded lever switch
- Pure Tone multi contact jack socket
If you are ordering this wiring kit to go along with your McNelly Pickups, we would recommend the .022uF capacitor option as the McNelly range has been designed with that rating in mind. Also note, if you select the 4 way switch option, you will need to ground the neck pickup cover with an additional wire.
What comes with my harness?
You'll be supplied with the wiring harness itself of course, along with a printed wiring diagram to follow during fitting (which is also available to view via a link in the footer of my website along with lots of other handy wiring diagrams) as well as a handy fitting guide with tips to help make the fitting process as simple as possible. The harness also comes mounted on an MDF template, which might be handy for future use too!
