Model Description
The introduction of my harness for Precision Bass was to compliment the models of McNelly P Bass pickups that I also offer, and I wanted a quality upgrade for your wiring that would work well with those great pickups. It's a simple recipe of the highest quality components to bring the best out in your bass. 

Please note, website example photo(s) may differ visually from the wiring kit you receive. This could be for a number of reasons but ultimately, don't be alarmed if you do spot differences between the stock photo and your supplied kit. 

Options

Which pot spec do I need?
Traditionally split coil P-Basses were equipped with 250k pots and I would say this is by far the most popular spec option chosen. Some players prefer and have requested over the years 500k pots though so I offer this as an option now to accommodate more pickup options. Ultimately it comes down to either personal preference (500k pots in a standard split coil P-Bass will sound brighter than the standard 250k pots will) depending on the tone you like from your bass, or what the pickup manufacturer recommends for you specific pickup. 

In regards to whether you would need split, or solid shaft pots. This ultimately comes down to what control knobs you plan to use on the bass. Split shaft pots use push-fit control knobs whereas solid shaft pots require control knobs that fix to the pot via a grub screw. Both are a different size and measurements are detailed below.
Useful tip - If you haven't decided what style of control knobs you are going to use, and can't make up your mind yet, I would recommend choosing the split shaft version as I also offer brass conversion sleeves which would convert split shaft to solid shaft pots with ease. So best recommendation if you're not sure, go for split shaft as they can always be converted easily, whereas with solid shaft pots you are tied to that as the only choice.

Capacitor value
This may come down to personal tastes in terms of overall tone and the tone control response, what your pickup maker recommends or what period of Precision Bass you have/are trying to replicate. No 'right' or 'wrong' here, all personal preference.
.022uF I would consider as a great all round spec, nice roll off of the treble frequencies through the tone control sweep and a little more top end left over. Proved to be popular for band scenarios, not getting lost in the mix etc. I consider this the more 'modern' spec and has been the most popular choice/spec for many years of offering this particular kit. You can still achieve a nice warm tone by rolling the pot down, but at 10 it will be the 'brightest' tone of the three cap options. The .047uF cap spec has a slightly more drastic roll off of the trebles and warmer tone overall, and this was also the spec used on 70s onward built models. Vintage 60s Precision's were equipped with a .1uF tone cap, these help produce the 'darkest' tone of the three options, a particularly warm vintage correct tone. 

Additional bridge ground wire?
I have added this option for those who are perhaps building a guitar from scratch like a partscaster for example. If this is you, then the pre-soldered length of ground wire may be useful as that will be used as your bridge or tailpiece ground. A 1ft length of wire will be attached. If you are fitting this wiring kit to an existing guitar as a replacement to the original wiring, then chances are your guitar already has a bridge ground wire and you can simply just keep and use your original wire. 

Fitting notes

I have intended for my wiring harnesses to be as simple as possible to install to your P-Bass, as well as writing in depth fitting guides, how-to instructions documenting the step by step process as well as a simple to follow wiring diagram. But here are some important spec and fitting notes that will hopefully help you assess whether the kit is suitable for your bass guitar or what is required to allow it to fit correctly.


Will the pots fit my control plate?
The components I use in my Signature Series wiring kits are for the most part, USA imperial specification. If you're fitting this harness to a far east built guitar such as a Squier or similar brand, then you may have to widen the holes in the control plate to accommodate for these imperial measurement pots. Or alternatively, purchase a new control plate that is already suited to the US spec components. The CTS pots have a mounting thread shaft diameter of 0.370" / 9.4mm so I recommend for ease of install a control plate with a 0.394" / 10mm pot mounting hole.
The jack socket I use in this kit again is imperial specification, the outer thread diameter measures 0.367" / 9.32mm and ideally requires a 0.394" / 10mm hole to comfortably mount.


Centre to centre measurements between components are -
Centre of Volume pot to centre of tone pot - 53mm
Centre of tone pot to centre of jack socket - 53mm
These measurements for my templates were taken from a USA Fender P-Bass pickguard. There is a small amount of 'give' in the wire lengths between the components, but if for any reason the measurements on your bass are drastically different to those stated above, please do get in touch and I may be able to make your kit with an allowance for this. You will need to provide your centre to centre measurements to me. 

What control knobs will fit?
The solid shaft version uses CTS Solid shaft pots which have a solid shaft diameter of 0.248" / 6.30mm. You will need control knobs that suit these measurements and secure to the pot via a grub screw on the control knob.
Whereas the split shaft version uses CTS Split Shaft pots which have a adjustable split shaft diameter of 0.236" / 5.95mm. As standard these will fit push-fit/spline style control knobs to match the measurement stated. But, if you wish to use grub screw style control knobs then the kit can be ordered along with a pair of solid shaft brass conversion sleeves. These fit onto the split shaft post and convert it to 0.248"/6.30mm solid shaft for you.
Do not attempt to force fit smaller, metric/import spec control knobs onto the imperial USA spec pots, doing this can damage the pot.

Why these spec parts over others available?
Simply put, component choice has been one of the most important parts of my product development. I have worked on guitars for many years, and built these kits professionally since 2015, and as a result have been able to see and experience working on the majority of components available on the market. In my findings, A/B testing and more, I have found the components I decided on for my Signature Series to be the most reliable, best tolerance and great functioning parts to use to help customers get the most out of their instruments. I use CTS '450' series premium spec pots as they have a tight tolerance, and will consistently provide me with accurate value, as well as very solid build quality. I use trusty 'Mustard' style polyester film 'tone' capacitors as in my opinion they simply can't be beat for great value, solid construction, solid lead-outs, super tight tolerances and reliable tone/function. I would personally much rather use a trusty Mustard for example over something like a paper in oil, as from experience that are so much more reliable to use. This is from carrying out a lot of A/B testing, both tonally, as well as armed with the multi-meter for testing values and actual tolerances, as well as handling them to test construction quality for long lasting reliability in use. I use the brilliant 'Pure Tone' Multi Contact Jack sockets as they are incredibly reliable, due to their additional contact points for both tip and sleeve. I use CRL, Oak and Switchcraft brand switches across the range as these are built very well, with care will last for many years to come and have long since provided me with reliable use professionally. All kits are wired up with quality USA made Gavitt wire, it's great to work with, super consistent gauge and provides me with a very reliable quality item for my kits. I totally understand that with anything guitar, it is subjective, but I have, with an open mind, thoroughly tested a broad variety of components over the years and these have all become the items I trust to use every day.

Do you make custom harnesses?

I'm afraid I do not offer a custom harness service. Only kits developed, tested and listed on my website are the available kits. So no custom schematics etc. If you happen to be local to my office, then I do carry out custom work in house, but in regards to shipped out pre-wired harnesses I do not offer custom kits. I am however happy to use different pot values or cap values within reason if you have a specific requirement that differs to the specs listed above.
