Description

This strat sized single coil pickup in the Musicmaster and/or Bronco bass provides a bump in output and fatness over the factory 6 pole electric guitar pickup usually found in these short scale bass models. A great upgrade over the standard pickup, bringing out more clarity and defined low end.

Bold, thumping low end with a generous side of clarity is what the goal was here. Originally, these short scale bass models used a 6-string guitar pickup under the cover. In designing a more appropriate replacement, the idea came up of adding in extra poles to more closely mimic a P Bass or Jazz Bass design. There's barely enough space for it to work, but boy does it work. It brings a Musicmaster or Bronco to life. You will love this pickup and has proved to be an incredibly popular McNelly offering here.

Nerdy specs

Type - Passive
Wire type - 2 wire
DCR bridge - 10.5k
Magnet direction - North up
Coil direction - Clockwise

Recommended wiring - The Broncomaster pickup is generally seen paired with 250k pots, and a 0.022uF capacitor, but you could also pair it with a 0.047uF if you prefer a slightly warmer tone and steeper roll off.

Will it fit my Bass?

This specific Broncomaster is traditional Musicmaster and Bronco bass bridge pickup size and mount (which is actually Strat guitar size and mount too). It is intended for traditional suspended mounting via the pickguard and has a threaded baseplate.

Installation

This pickup is traditional 2 wire as standard (Gavitt cloth 22awg wire, usually off-white for hot and black for ground). If by chance you aren't comfortable installing these pickups yourself, and are local to the Home of Tone, then I offer professional in-house installation. If you are installing them yourself, then I am of course here for any installation advise too.

Wiring to match?

If you're considering replacing your wiring alongside this set of pickups, then don't forget that I also offer my 'Signature Series' range of pre-wired kits, which include both Musicmaster and Bronco Bass options. You can check out the bass kits available HERE

Hear the Broncomaster

Please note that this bass also had my wiring kit upgrade which is CTS 250k pots, .022uF cap, pure tone jack and Gavitt 22AWG wire.

A great comparison video made by a customer, Michael who kindly put this video together after purchasing the full pre-wired harness and McNelly Broncomaster kit. Worth listening with headphones for sure, the bass has flatwounds fitted and the quality of frequency response can really be heard via the headphones. Big thank you to Michael for making this video!

About McNelly

One of my first wishes about setting up my store was to concentrate on quality. McNelly couldn't fulfill that wish any better. I've worked with McNelly Pickups since 2015, and has been one of the most reliable, consistent, innovative and inspiring suppliers to work with and it's an honour to represent such a quality brand here in the UK.

Made by Tim McNelly and his team in Canada, every single pickup is created with the utmost passion for their craft. From the design process to refining tone detail, unique and timeless aesthetics to the finest build quality you'd hope to see.

Every detail is considered by Tim to ensure their pickups are the finest they possibly could be. From material and part selection, to care and workmanship during the winding and making process. The result is tone that speaks for itself.

What's included with the pickup?

Inside the box you'll find the pickup(s) you have ordered, along with your mounting screws/fixings.

Custom options?

If you love the look of this pickup model, but the standard options don't quite suit your requirements then we can certainly help with that.
As McNelly Pickups are primarily made to order, we can usually cater for custom requirements happily.
Need a humbucker with 4 conductor cable for custom switching? No problem
Need a wide spaced bridge pickup? No problem

If you have a custom, non standard request, please contact me prior to placing your order and we can chat about your requirements and see about making it happen for you - james@homeoftone.co.uk
