The Telecaster is an iconic instrument that defined a brand, inspired so many musicians and set the bar for the solid body electric guitar moving forward. Thanks to the likes of Keef, Andy Summers and many more, 'HS' (Humbucker/Single Coil) configuration Teles have been incredibly popular for many years too.
But mixing pickup types highlights a particular issue when it comes to wiring, the pot choice compromise! Do you opt for the more traditional Tele choice of 250k pots, which can lead to a dark sounding humbucker position. Or 500k pots which could lead to an overly bridge Tele single coil sound. Some players may well prefer either of those anyway, but if you'd rather do your best to reduce the compromise and try to help each pickup sound it's best, then this harness may be of some help to you!
Those familiar with my pre-wired kits, may already know about my long standard 'HS' Telecaster wiring kit. That kit has been one of my most popular kits, making use of 500k pots and a 470kOhm resistor mod to try and reduce the HS wiring compromise. This kit however, furthers that idea and uses some rather cool stacked 500k/250k pots! These particular pots are made by CTS, and custom commissioned by Fender. I first saw them used on a Fender master built HS Telecaster (photo above!), which sounded fantastic and well balanced, so I wanted to develop a kit based around them. Although it is two pots in one, a 'stacked' or 'dual concentric' pot usually also features two pot shafts meaning you have the stacked control knobs to control each one. These have a singular pot shaft, meaning you can use a regular control knob for easier use and functionality.
What this means is you can have the humbucker running through the 500k side (with a 0.02mfd cap), and the bridge single coil running through the 250k side (with a 0.05mfd cap). Dedicated pots and caps for each pickup! In testing this sounded great to my ear.
Seeing as we're now getting the 'best' so to speak from the pot/cap options for each pickup, I wanted to coax some additional fun from this new kit. So I offer it made with a 5 way super switch, or if you have more traditionally wired pickups, a traditional 3 way version too.
5 way version -
So this kit is for those of you that use a neck humbucker with 4 conductor wiring, and would like some additional tones to make the most of that pickup wiring style. For this kit to work, your neck humbucker must have 4 conductor wiring. This will providing you with coil split via the selector switch of the humbucker in position 4 and 2.
Switching (5 way)
Position 1 - Bridge pickup
Position 2 - Bridge pickup and neck humbucker split
Position 3 - Bridge pickup and neck humbucker full
Position 4 - Neck humbucker split
Position 5 - Neck humbucker
3 way version -
If your humbucker is 1c or 2c wired, such as braided wire for example, but you love the sound of these stacked pots, then don't fear, I have created a 3 way version of this HS Supreme kit too! It just features a CRL 3 way blade switch, provide the traditional 3 Telecaster pickup positions of neck, neck and bridge in parallel, and bridge. This spec kit could also be used with a 4c wired humbucker, so if you just prefer 3 way switching, don't care for coil splitting but have a 4c wired humbucker, then you can absolutely still use the 3 way version.
Lastly, this kit also offers the option of a no-load modded humbucker tone pot. This option specifically comes down to the neck position humbucker. Despite this kit using the optimised 500k spec for a humbucker, you may have a particularly dark sounding HB, a very hot output humbucker etc that you just really want to help ensure it doesn't get muddy. So I offer this kit with a solution to that, should it be helpful.
As standard, the tone pot is left as-is. Just a regular, audio taper 500k tone pot with a 0.02mfd cap.
But if you want to coax a little more brightness out of your humbucker, I can no-load mod the humbuckers tone pot track, meaning with the pot all the way up on '10' so to speak, the tone pot is out of the circuit. Turn it, and it works like a normal tone pot, but on 10 it's out of the circuit and not having any influence on the overall humbucker sound. Quite helpful in brightening up a darker humbucker, if that sounds helpful to you, select the no-load mod.
The single coil's 250k tone pot will be kept as is, standard audio taper spec, not no-load modded as generally, that position is spot on with these specs. Those pesky neck humbuckers however sometimes demand more of our attention lol!
So! There we have it, a run down of my new 'HS Supreme' 3 and 5 way Telecaster pre-wired kits. If these pique your interest, then head over to their dedicate product pages, have a good read through the description to ensure it suits your needs, and will physically fit your Telecaster too (IE cavity routing depth etc) and I hope this all helps!
