About Seymour Duncan
Seymour Duncan have long cemented themselves as the leading aftermarket pickup brand in the world, offering a staggering selection of models, and doing so affordably too. Throughout their range they have created iconic models that stand the test of time, popular for a variety of guitars and music styles.
About the Hot Rails™ Model
Hot Rails™ have been used by countless well known players, adorn lord knows how many Strats in the world and are right up there as one of the most iconic pickup models from the Seymour Duncan range. Hum-cancelling, drop-in sizing, versatile wiring. They offer a Strat player a lot in their humble little casings that's for sure! I have fitted lots of these over the years of handling workshop jobs, so have had a lot of experience working with them. If you're keen to capture some humbucker like tones from the bridge position in your Strat, but don't want to have to worry about changing pots, getting a new pickguard or needing to route the body, the classic Hot Rails™ offers you a superb drop-in solution. If you do fancy mixing things up wiring wise though, thanks to the 4 conductor wiring you can experiment, I particularly feel the design works brilliantly well with a series/parallel switch (or push/pull for example) switching the two coils from standard series wiring to parallel wiring captures some single coil like tones whilst still being hum-cancelling. A classic from Seymour Duncan, and proud to offer it here to my customers too.
What SD say:
"End your quest for fire with the Hot Rails for Strat single coil sized humbuckers. The Hot Rails neck model uses a strong ceramic magnet and overwound coils to deliver big sounding, well balanced humbucker tones for rock and metal. Clean tones are fat and warm, and solos will have that thick, fluid feel. The dual blade construction gives you the ultimate string coverage, especially for notes that are bent on the highest frets.
The Hot Rails bridge model single coil ‘rails’ sized humbucker delivers high output, loads of midrange harmonics, and an aggressive crunch that makes this a great bridge pickup for rock and metal. Chords are full and powerful, and single notes jump out with amazing sizzle. A Hot Rails in the bridge position will literally transform your Strat into a completely different instrument.
Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, the Hot Rails for Strat Set comes with a 4-conductor lead wire for multiple wiring options and is wax potted for squeal free operation."
Nerdy specs
Magnet - Ceramic
Type - Passive
Wire type - 4 conductor shielded
DCR bridge - 16.6k
Dimensions - Click here for sizing spec sheet
Recommended wiring - The Hot Rails humbucker was primarily designed to be a 'drop-in' solution for existing Strats, therefore is generally seen paired with 250k pots, and 0.047uF (SD's recommendation) or 0.022uF tone capacitor values depending on personal preference or application. In the bridge position, the Hot Rails seems to suit these specs well, but if you prefer it a little brighter, perhaps consider 500k pots too.
What's included?
Inside the box you'll find the neck and bridge pickups, along with your mounting screws and springs for each, and a wiring guide which covers traditional as well as alternative wiring styles.

Installation
These pickups are a direct replacement in terms of sizing and spec for a traditional Strat single coil routed pickguard. Although the corners are a little bit more square so sometimes a little gentle persuation is needed to fit within the pickguard, this is rare though. They are 4 conductor wired as standard which means you could wire it with some alternative switching options comfortably such as coil split, phase reversal or series/parallel, making them very versatile. If by chance you aren't comfortable installing these pickups yourself, and are local to the Home of Tone, then I offer professional in-house installation. If you are installing them yourself, then I am of course here for any installation advise too.
