From the comfort of the offset body shape, to the intuitive vibrato and ultimately, the sound. So this harness was definitely driven by the passion I have for pushing the traditional spec further.

Over the years, my Series-Mod kit has been one of the most popular jazzmaster specs I offer. This furthers the idea, providing even more usable options available to you, hence the ‘Multi-Master’ name.

This kit is a mash up of a few different specs, starting with the series mod. In the lead circuit, the tone pot is a push/pull pot that switches your neck and bridge pickups to series, for a boost in output and overall fatter, humbucker-like tone! Regardless of whether you are in the rhythm circuit, or in the lead circuit, you can switch to series mode providing you with the two pickups in series in both rhythm and lead circuits for two different sounds. It also overrides whichever pickup position you are in, so you don’t have to mess about switching the toggle switch to the middle position and then have to engage the push/pull, keeping it quick and simple.

Next up, this kit incorporates the superb ‘pickup select rhythm’ specs too from another of my popular kits. To me, this spec is an absolute no brainer for a Jazzmaster. It really opens up the tonal options for your rhythm circuit, by allowing you to switch between neck, neck and bridge, and bridge too! Traditionally wired Jazzmasters only feature the neck pickup on it’s own in the rhythm circuit, so being able to hear that unique sound in the middle and bridge positions too improves the overall Jazzmaster tonal experience for sure.

Finally! I offer this kit with the option of a traditional spec rhythm circuit, so a 1MEG volume, 50kOhm tone and a .022mfd capacitor, for those vintage correct rhythm circuit tones (albeit with the added ability to switch pickups and have them in series too). I also offer it with my ‘Bright Switch’ spec rhythm circuit, where it’s equipped with 1MEG for both volume and tone, and a .033mfd capacitor. I opted to offer this spec primarily as it has been a common request to make my series mod kit with 1MEG pots, so now this is available here, but also as it may be useful if you primarily like warmer JM tones but would like the access to bright JM tones from time to time so having that spec nestled up in the rhythm circuit is helpful.

There are a couple of things to note though, specifically in regards to the pot specs. I much, much prefer the CTS 450 series push/pull pots over any other push/pull pot on the market Their construction quality and reliability, in my opinion, is far and above the others, so I only want to use those in this kit, but sadly no one yet commissions those to be made in 1MEG.
So, offer this kit with a few options with that in mind. So please note, this spec kit isn’t available with the traditional Jazzmaster 1MEG volume AND tone lead circuit pots. However, if you really prefer the traditional, brighter 1MEG Jazzmaster lead circuit specs, then I offer it with a 1MEG volume pot, but it will have a 500k tone pot. The difference will be subtle, but it's worth keeping this in mind.
Alternatively, if the bright Jazzmaster sound isn't for you, then you can choose 500k pots, or even 250k if you're looking for an all round warmer response.

Product options

Lead circuit pot spec
As noted in the main model description section, due to the limitation of there being no available CTS 450 series push/pull pot in 1MEG spec, it is worth reading through the pot specs to ensure your choice helps capture the overall sound you like.

Traditionally, Jazzmasters are seen equipped with 1MEG lead circuit pots. If you want to retain as much of that bright, tonal character as possible, then I can make the kit with a 1MEG volume pot (choice of vintage spec linear taper, or audio tapers available) but with a 500k tone pot for the series push/pull. For the most part, this will get you very close to the traditional 1MEG jazzmaster sound.
A linear taper 1MEG pot was what Fender used on the original/vintage Jazzmasters. In terms of how that responds, if you play primarily clean or with very minimal gain, and like your volume pot sweep to be spread further across the pot taper, then linear is a great choice for you. If you play with gain, or prefer a 'quicker' response from your volume pot, which can be helpful for quick pinky swells for example. Not needing to rotate the pot too far to get a noticable response, then an audio taper volume pot is great.

500k pots will mostly capture the overall vibe of a Jazzmaster sound, but will tame the top end found in traditionally spec'd 1MEG Jazzmasters. If you find the Jazzmaster normally sounds too ice-pick bright, but would still like some of the Jazzmaster character, I would recommend the 500k spec for this particular kit. Audio taper is used as standard in the 500k pot spec

250k pots will provide a warmer tone by comparison to the 500k pots, and for those that are chasing a notably warmer tone from their guitar, or have a set of pickups better suited to this pot spec. Audio taper is used as standard in the 250kpot spec

With or without Treble Bleed?
First up, what does it do? Without a 'treble bleed', when you roll down the volume pot it will naturally lose some of the treble frequencies through the sweep. A Treble Bleed kit takes the 'high' treble tone frequencies out of the circuit at the volume pot, and puts them back in the circuit as the signal leaves the volume pot. This means the treble frequencies are prevented from naturally bleeding out of the circuit as your turn your volume pot down. The result is a smoothed out treble and a more uniform tone from 1 to 10. Reducing the treble drop out as the volume pot rolls off. Some guitar players wouldn't be without a treble bleed, and many have never used one on their guitars. Truth is, it is very much personal preference. If you like the idea of retaining treble as you roll your volume pot down, then a treble bleed is for you! For the standard spec, I use a ceramic 680pF capacitor with a carbon film 220kOhm resistor parallel wired.

Rhythm circuit pot specs
I offer this kit with the option of a traditional spec rhythm circuit, so a 1MEG volume, 50kOhm tone and a .022mfd capacitor, for those vintage correct rhythm circuit tones (albeit with the added ability to switch pickups and have them in series too).

I also offer it with my ‘Bright Switch’ spec rhythm circuit, where it’s equipped with 1MEG for both volume and tone, and a .033mfd capacitor. Traditional Jazzmaster body cavities will accomodate for this, but it is certainly worth double checking yours prior to ordering/installing.

Can I fit this kit myself?
This ultimately comes down to whether you own the equipment needed to correctly and safely install the kit, or how comfortable you feel working on your own guitar. I do feel that installing a pre-wired guitar harness is do-able for many guitarists but only if the correct tools are used and care is taken to ensure you do not damage the kit, your guitar or yourself! There are detailed installation guides here on my website, as well as simple to follow wiring diagrams all to help make the process as easy as possible and in my experience, these have helped thousands of my customers carry out their own install. But if for any reason you have concerns about fitting the kit yourself which is entirely understandable, then I'm sure you'll agree that it is likely best to have a professional fit the kit and help ensure your purchased kit, and your beloved guitar are both looked after and worked on correctly.
If you are local to me (Stourbridge, West Midlands) I take on guitar work no problem at all so will certainly be able to help install your Signature Series harness.

I would also note here, that soldering the pickup wires onto the tighter push/pull pot might be tricky for some installers. If you are well acquainted with a soldering iron, you'll sail it I'm sure, but if you a new to soldering, I would perhaps recommend having a trusted local tech install this kit for you to ensure no damage is caused to the components and it all functions correctly.

Will the pots/jack fit my pickguard and jack plate?
The components I use in my Signature Series wiring kits are for the most part, USA imperial specification, and will be a direct replacement for a genuine USA or Mexico made Fender Jazzmaster. I have worked on guitars for many years, and built these kits professionally since 2015, and as a result have been able to see and experience working on the majority of components available on the market. In my findings, A/B testing and more, I have found the components I decided on for my Signature Series to be the most reliable, best tolerance and great functioning parts to use to help customers get the most out of their instruments. I use CTS '450' series premium spec pots as they have a tight tolerance, and will consistently provide me with accurate value, as well as very solid build quality. I use trusty 'Mustard' style polyester film 'tone' capacitors as in my opinion they simply can't be beat for great value, solid construction, solid lead-outs, super tight tolerances and reliable tone/function. I would personally much rather use a trusty Mustard for example over something like a paper in oil, as from experience that are so much more reliable to use. This is from carrying out a lot of A/B testing, both tonally, as well as armed with the multi-meter for testing values and actual tolerances, as well as handling them to test construction quality for long lasting reliability in use. I use the brilliant 'Pure Tone' Multi Contact Jack sockets as they are incredibly reliable, due to their additional contact points for both tip and sleeve. I use CRL, Oak and Switchcraft brand switches across the range as these are built very well, with care will last for many years to come and have long since provided me with reliable use professionally. All kits are wired up with quality USA made Gavitt wire, it's great to work with, super consistent gauge and provides me with a very reliable quality item for my kits. I totally understand that with anything guitar, it is subjective, but I have, with an open mind, thoroughly tested a broad variety of components over the years and these have all become the items I trust to use every day.

Harness FAQ's

I've been proudly making, developing and installing my pre-wired guitar harnesses since the beginning of the Home of Tone back in 2015 (time flies when you're having fun right!). If this is relevant to yourself then please get in touch to discuss further to ensure the request is possible.

GPSR & Safety info

Manufacturer: James' Home of Tone, Laburnum Street, Stourbridge, DY8 4NX, UK.
Email: james@homeoftone.co.uk

EU Authorised Representative:

Global Trade Department NI, Office 834, 92 Castle Street, Belfast, BT1 1HE, Northern Ireland.
