Thanks to the likes of Keith Richards, Andy Summers and many more, 'HS' (Humbucker\/Single Coil) configuration Teles have been incredibly popular for many years. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut mixing pickup types highlights a particular issue when it comes to wiring, the pot choice compromise! Do you opt for the more traditional Tele choice of 250k pots, which will more than likely lead to a dark sounding humbucker position. Or 500k pots which could lead to an overly bridge Tele single coil sound. Some players may well prefer either of those anyway, but if you'd rather do your best to reduce the compromise and try to help each pickup sound it's best, then this harness may be of some help to you!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eThose familiar with my pre-wired kits, may already know about my long standard \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.homeoftone.co.uk\/collections\/telecaster-harness-models\/products\/signature-series-pre-wired-hs-telecaster-harness-kit-right-handed\" title=\"HS Telecaster pre wired kit\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e'HS' Telecaster wiring kit\u003c\/a\u003e. That kit has been one of my most popular kits, making use of 500k pots and a 470kOhm resistor mod to try and reduce the HS wiring compromise. This kit however, furthers that idea and uses some rather cool \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.homeoftone.co.uk\/products\/fender-dual-500k-250k-split-shaft-potentiometer\" title=\"Fender CTS 500k 250k dual gang pots\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003estacked 500k\/250k\u003c\/a\u003e pots. These particular pots are made by CTS, and custom commissioned by Fender. I first saw them used on a Fender master built HS Telecaster, which sounded fantastic and well balanced, so I wanted to develop a kit based around them. Although it is two pots in one, a 'stacked' or 'dual concentric' pot usually also features two pot shafts meaning you have the stacked control knobs to control each one. These have a singular pot shaft, meaning you can use a regular control knob for easier use and functionality and a traditional looking control plate too.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhat this means is you can have the humbucker running through the 500k side (with a 0.02mfd cap), and the bridge single coil running through the 250k side (with a 0.05mfd cap). Dedicated pots for each pickup! In testing this sounded great to my ear.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis specific version of the HS Supreme kit is the more traditional 3 way version. So if you prefer traditional switching, or have a humbucker with 1c or 2c wiring that won't allow for coil splitting, then this is the kit for you. But these specific pots used in this kit, only come with split shafts. So, I can leave them as split shaft pots, so if you fancy mixing it up a bit and using some alternative style control knobs that require a push-fit then you'll need to choose this option. Or I can pre-install some solid shaft conversion sleeves so you can stick with traditional US spec grub screw secured control knobs.\u003cbr\u003eFor reference CTS solid shaft pots are 6.35mm (1\/4\") and require a control knob that secures in place via a grub screw fixing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCTS split shaft pots are 5.95mm w\/24 splines and require a control knob that secures in place by push-fit. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHumbucker tone pot spec\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis option specifically comes down to the neck position humbucker. Despite this kit using the optimised 500k spec for a humbucker, you may have a particularly dark sounding HB, a very hot output humbucker etc that you just really want to help ensure it doesn't get muddy. So I offer this kit with a solution to that, should it be helpful.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs standard, the tone pot is left as-is. Just a regular, audio taper 500k tone pot with a 0.02mfd cap. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut if you want to coax a little more brightness out of your humbucker, I can no-load mod the humbuckers tone pot track, meaning with the pot all the way up on '10' so to speak, the tone pot is out of the circuit. Turn it, and it works like a normal tone pot, but on 10 it's out of the circuit and not having any influence on the overall humbucker sound. Quite helpful in brightening up a darker humbucker, if that sounds helpful to you, select the no-load mod.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe single coil's 250k tone pot will be kept as is, standard audio taper spec, not no-load modded as generally, that position is spot on with these specs. I do feel that installing a pre-wired guitar harness is do-able for many guitarists but only if the correct tools are used and care is taken to ensure you do not damage the kit, your guitar or yourself! If you're fitting this harness to a far east built guitar such as a Squier or similar brand, then you may have to widen the holes in the control plate to accommodate for these imperial measurement pots. Or alternatively, purchase a new control plate that is already suited to the US spec components. The CTS pots and Pure Tone multi contact jack have a mounting thread shaft diameter of 0.369\" \/ 9.38mm so I recommend for ease of install a control plate and\/or jackplate with 0.394\" \/ 10mm pot\/jack mounting holes. You can easily widen the holes in the control plate too if you would prefer, I recommend doing this safely with a step cutter drill bit. I also offer this as a service so if you would like me to widen your plate for you, do please get in touch and we can organise this additionally.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIf you’re buying this kit for a USA or Mexican made Tele, then chances are it will be a direct, no modifications install process for you. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCentre to centre measurements between components are - \u003cbr\u003eCentre of Switch to volume pot - 40mm\u003cbr\u003eCentre of volume pot to centre of tone pot - 64mm\u003cbr\u003eThese measurements for my templates were taken from a USA Fender telecaster control plate. \u003cspan\u003eThere is a small amount of 'give' in the wire lengths between the components, but if for any reason the measurements on your Telecaster are drastically different to those stated above, please do get in touch and I may be able to make your kit with an allowance for this. You will need to provide your centre to centre measurements to me. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhat control knobs will fit?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe CTS Solid shaft pots have a solid shaft diameter of 0.248\" \/ 6.30mm. The jack socket I use in this kit again is imperial specification, the outer thread diameter measures 0.367\" \/ 9.32mm and ideally requires a 0.394\" \/ 10mm hole to comfortably mount. If you have a threaded electrosocket style jack cup, you will need the imperial thread pitch version. I have worked on guitars for many years, and built these kits professionally since 2015, and as a result have been able to see and experience working on the majority of components available on the market. In my findings, A\/B testing and more, I have found the components I decided on for my Signature Series to be the most reliable, best tolerance and great functioning parts to use to help customers get the most out of their instruments. I use CTS '450' series premium spec pots as they have a tight tolerance, and will consistently provide me with accurate value, as well as very solid build quality. I use trusty 'Mustard' style polyester film 'tone' capacitors as in my opinion they simply can't be beat for great value, solid construction, solid lead-outs, super tight tolerances and reliable tone\/function. I would personally much rather use a trusty Mustard for example over something like a paper in oil, as from experience that are so much more reliable to use. This is from carrying out a lot of A\/B testing, both tonally, as well as armed with the multi-meter for testing values and actual tolerances, as well as handling them to test construction quality for long lasting reliability in use. I use the brilliant 'Pure Tone' Multi Contact Jack sockets as they are incredibly reliable, due to their additional contact points for both tip and sleeve. I use CRL, Oak and Switchcraft brand switches across the range as these are built very well, with care will last for many years to come and have long since provided me with reliable use professionally. All kits are wired up with quality USA made Gavitt wire, it's great to work with, super consistent gauge and provides me with a very reliable quality item for my kits.
